Start of the Grossglockner Trail is in the middle of Kals am Großglockner (Musikpavillon). From Kals the track runs on the old "Glocknerstrasse" towards Lucknerhaus, there with the first stunning views of the Grossglockner.
From there on soft trails through beautiful flower meadows to the roof of the tour and supply station at Glorer Hütte (2,642 m). From there softly downhill and short up to Salmhütte, the Grossglockner always in view. After passing Salmhütte we continue on fine trails to Stockerscharte (2,465 m) with stunning views of the Pasterze. From the Stockerscharte technically challenging downhill over the dam of the reservoir Margaritze, up passing the Glocknerhaus, at the end over a snowfield to the Untere Pfandlscharte (2,663 m). With a last glance back on the Grossglockner over a snowfield (attention) in a long downhill down to the Trauneralm, from there flat to Ferleiten and then slightly falling on trails to Fusch an der Glocknerstraße.
From Fusch into the last climb, then downhill to the finish in the center of Kaprun at Salzburger Platz. We pass 5 glaciers, around 300 peaks with more than 3,000 m.
GGT 55 is probaly the most runable race at GGUT. However it still means a challenging track with mostly high alpine trail running. The average high elevation in the first half of the track means an additional challenge. With 3,500 positive and 4,000 negative vertical meters and often technically very difficult terrain, the race is a challenge for every trail runner. Racing experience at comparable distances, preferably in the mountains, sure-footedness as well as experience in alpine terrain are prerequisites for the race. Please check below for the character of the race, and pre-conditions as well as the required "Obligatory equipment".

Grossglockner Trail (GGT 55) is a challenging trail running competition, leading mostly through difficult alpine territory, often higher than 2,500 m. Expect 2 larger snowfields to cross, under bad weather conditions even more. For the largest part the track leads over trails (80 %), which are (partwise very) difficult. Bad weather conditions (low temperatures, rainfall, snow) make the race even harder.
Trails are in average very technical. The hardest parts will be the trails up to and down the high mountain passes: Pfortscharte (2,838 m), Stockerscharte (2,465 m) and Untere Pfandlscharte (2,663 m).
Every participant has to be so physically fit and surefooted that they can manage the chosen trail according to the rules. Experience at longer competitions, in any case combined with experience for moving in high alpine environment are a precondition for the participation in Glockner Trail. The minimum age for participation is 18 years.
The overall time limit for GGT 55 is 16 hours.
